MYO Gesture Control Brings Magic

I thought that Leap Motion device is the future. With all its gesture controls and “Minority Report style” options. But here is something much more interesting — MYO device for your armband.

There are no optical sensors this time. The elastic armband controls not only arm movement, but also muscular activity. So, it can detect changes in hand gesture right down to each individual finger. There is NO LAG as MYO reads electrical signals in your muscles and they appear before you even start the gesture. Muscle-scanning and multi-axis accelerometer technology is proprietary.

And what is even more appealing, you can use it outside too. Imagine the possibilities! Thalmic founder Stephen Lake is totally right, when saying “There is a trend towards more tightly integrating technology with who we are as people“. We see it everywhere.

Myo Armband Muscles

Any device with Bluetooth will be supported — PC, smartphones and why not… Google Glass ?? Not everyone wants to talk to his device aloud, eye movement tracking can still be far away from perfect and pressing buttons on the glasses temple is wearisome and old-fashioned. Just curve finger or swipe a bit and image is posted to Facebook.

Video shows “Google Glass style” device on a skier, who controls it by MYO. Especially I liked business presentation example, take a look.

20 gestures are already recognized out of the box and there will be more for sure. It already has all the functionality to control computers, play games, show presentations etc. API will be documented for developers to create even more robust applications.

Price for such a magnificent device is only $149; sad news is that it is only a pre-order. Thalmic Labs says it is going to be available in late 2013, long time to wait.

But the future seems exciting.

Google Glass For The Lucky Ones

Now, you can be a lucky owner of the first Google Glass prototypes. Yes, it is a new milestone for this project and be prepared.

You need to fulfill 4 requirements:

  • Be a US resident (I believe, most readers of this blog are from US)
  • Be ready to spend $1500 (plus tax) — reasonable price for becoming one of the first testers
  • Convince Google that you are the right person. This one is tricky, see instructions below.
  • Be able to attend Google Glass event in either New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Google Glass Translate

Ok, what’s needed to become the lucky one? Write a short story (not more than 50 words) in Google+ or Twitter (no Facebook, ha-ha!) using hashtag #ifihadglass explaining what you would do if you had Glass. Simple as that. Also, you can attach up to 5 photos and 15 sec video, if you want.

Hopefully, you are older than 18 years 🙂 Hurry up as deadline is 27th of February.

All the information is available now at the official (and very cool) webpage — Google Glass Official. Be sure to check an awesome video, demonstrating current possibilities like taking pics and videos by voice, checking directions, weather, info, googling for anything you want, showing live picture to your friends (jumping with a parachute!!) etc.

Consumer version should be available around beginning of 2014 (damn too long to wait).

Already now it is awesome.

I need one.

Now.

Making Ingress Better – Part 3

Let’s see, what else needs to be improved in the Ingress Game. There is quite a big list, compiled from my thoughts and ideas of the Ingress community members. I have picked up some of the most important ones.

Previous posts are here and here.

Main game logic should be enhanced a bit and let me tell you why.

5) Introduce third faction to the Ingress

This is something, which received a lot of support from the players. Currently, game is too straightforward as there are only two teams. So, you conquer, other team fights for the portal and gets it back. Third faction (Red one?) can add much more instability and fun.

This is well explained by the Game Theory. And best strategy computer games had at least three forces. For example, StarCraft.

There is some evidence of this unknown force in the Niantic storyline — Verum Inveniri. Probably, they will be the “Real Resistance”? And current Resistance just thinks they are fighting for humanity, but still unwittingly help to establish Shaper’s presence? Verum Inveniri folks will also have different gameplay logic and goals, of course. Probably, even totally different mobile app.

6) Don’t play for a long time? Lose AP and level.

This one can be discussed and some will strongly oppose it. But in my opinion, this “level decay” (similar to portal decay) should be implemented in one or another way. At least, till Niantic introduces some goals to play, apart from simply building personal Level (talked about it earlier here).

Level Decay is at least something to motivate first starters to keep playing.

7) Additional mods to the Ingress gameplay

Yes, these are coming (read Ingress hangout summary with Niantic folks). Still, couple of ideas:

  • Mines. You approach portal and boom! Lose XM and probably even AP.
  • Turrets. Portal tries to defense itself not only when you hack or capture it, but even when you just come closer and collect XM.
  • Anti-personal weapons. Some limited stuff to bring extra fun to the game. You see an enemy on the street and launch a missile 🙂

Of course, all these add-ons should be carefully balanced before being introduced to the game.

Advanced Ingress Player

8) User should be allowed to switch on GPS tracking to reveal his location

To the same faction, not to the enemies 🙂 This is useful, when you plan to coordinate attacks and want to see, who is where. Saves time, than typing in the COMM. Quite logical for the game story as well — why can’t players of the same team view position of each other? Like the real war.

Problem is still the same — cheaters. Some lame players (yes, cheaters are just weak lamers) can have multiple accounts and spy on other team. Anyway, players should be able to decide themselves, but currently, there is no such option in Mobile App.

Niantic Talks About Ingress

Niantic Labs has arranged a video conference hangout to answer questions on Ingress and provide some insight of what’s going on and how this is going to evolve.

There are some interesting point’s I would like to focus on:

  • As Brandon Badger told, there was no hidden purpose of the game. Nothing like aggregating data for Google’s services. Idea was to create a fun game with the goal to get people out.
  • There are many games, which allow making communities, but Ingress was intended to bring it out to the real world and help you to explore the neighbourhood.
  • Team is around 30-40 people, which form a start-up group inside Google.
  • They are monitoring social networks and listen to all suggestions. So, our big discussion last week was definitely noticed. I like such a deep interaction between players and game creators.
  • Professional writers were hired from LA to work on the Niantic story. And this story is not fixed; it is dynamic and also depends on remarkable Ingress and non-Ingress events around the globe.
  • Shapers “infect” minds and induce the creativity. This creativity results in specific pieces of art, which in turn increase Shaper’s presence in our world.

Ingress Icons

Noticeable facts about gameplay as well:

  • My concern regarding the whole point of gameplay was addressed. Niantic works on missions and accomplishments — mostly personal, but I believe team ones can also be introduced. IMHO, main trick to solve is to decide, where one team ends and starts another? Anyway, this sounds promising.
  • In addition, extra Levels can be added. Brandon mentioned “L9 – L16” but stressed that achievements is a better way to develop the game. I totally agree.
  • These achievements can be tied to some locations and you can complete them while travelling, for example.
  • Niantic already has different ideas for at least “year +” of gameplay.
  • They do not open game for everyone and cannot fix bugs so quickly, mainly because Ingress is based on servers and Niantic does not want to trigger an overload.
  • API is being developed, so that there can appear custom “Ingress style” games in future. Brandon looks forward to it, though server load is still the main concern.
  • Seems, this is also the main reason, why HackIngress is still not functioning. Hopefully, will be sorted soon.
  • Concern was raised in regards to the new players. Being L1 in a city with L5-L8 portals makes it impossible to play. Niantic works on the solution and an interesting suggestion has been made — “fight free zone”, dedicated only to newbies to level up.
  • One of the members of that hangout mentioned idea of a bird-eye view (exactly what I suggested here), which could be accessible not only when linking, but just by a dedicated button, for example. No clear response was received, but at least issue is raised once again. New Ingress Intel map partly resolves it, though.
  • New types of weapons and shields will be introduced. Turrets (found in the code long time ago) were mentioned, but again no clear answer on that.
  • Item inventory system needs rework (yes, this is for sure!). For example, item drop-pickup option. Niantic works on different solutions, including NFC method.
  • iPhone? Yes, it is in the roadmap with no deadline yet.

Ingress Map Glitch In San Francisco

Yesterday’s field over San Francisco has an interesting bug. See the lowest corner of the triangle?

Portal is in Resistance’s hands, though field exists. Check yourself. What do you think? Is it just a system glitch or mysterious Ingress logic?

Update: Brandon Badger from Niantic Labs confirmed in our Google+ page it is Shaper caused glitch. Oh, these extraterrestrial “guys” like to use tricks to enlighten everyone at all costs 🙂

Ingress San Francisco Glitch 2

And got report about same happening in Moscow. It was covered with Enlightened field and now right corner is already Blue, though city is still emerald green..

Moscow Enlightened Moscow Enlightened Glitch

Ingress Chronicles – Enlightened San Francisco

Another huge field in the Ingress game, the whole San Francisco area became Enlightened.

Strange enough, global MU percentage has not changed, though there is a lot of people living in this beautiful city. Seems, stats are wrong or Niantic simply has unknown count logic.

Anyway, now we will see lots of such remarkable fields as more and more people get high levels and learn how to extablish a useful coordination between each other.

Making Ingress Better – Part 2

I was pleasantly overwhelmed by positive discussions in comments of the first post, Google Plus page and Decode Ingress page.

I’ve heard lots of very interesting ideas, which only show that there is a big group of enthusiastic people, who really wish to make Ingress better.

I will sort all suggestions and include them in my series of posts on this topic and will contact Niantic Labs to let them know of your concerns.

So, let’s continue:

3) WE NEED AREA (INTEL) MAP TO WORK ON THE PHONE!!

Ingress LinksAnd without lags 🙂 Sorry for Caps Lock, I was frustrated. No, really, is it so hard to implement?

There is such functionality already (remember map, when you try to link something?), why not add it in the menu to use along with that fancy 3D field map? Highly anticipated enhancement.

Just imagine – zoom out field map, it smoothly transforms to the Intel style 3D and shows you the whole area around. Super.

I personally believe, it will be included as there is absolutely no reason for not doing so.

UPDATE from 02.02: Intel Map is now optimized for mobile devices as well.

Seems our prayers were heard. It is still not so smooth as could be and you still need to switch to browser, but anyway, thanks, Niantic!

4) Switch off screen, while collecting XM.

Ingress Screen StandbyThis is ridiculous, to be honest. Not only it drains battery, it also shortens the life of blue pixels on non-Pentile AMOLED screens (like the one on Samsung Galaxy S 2).

Here is a good news, as I just came across a nice app, which really ROCKS. It is called Screen Standby, needs rooted devices and has very broad set of settings.

I am using now the following settings -> Proximity sensor triggering, then Extra Settings -> Use two-stage screen off (to first start this program, then start Ingress and then “activate screen off” mode) and Wake lock (to prevent screen going to sleep).

The only downside I found is that touchscreen still active, so try not to press anything. There is an option to block the touchscreen, but it will be blocked till software is running. It will be annoying to start/stop it all the time.

At the same time it is a workaround. Would be great to have this option in Ingress app itself.
